Find allies. Recruit. Resist. Conquer. Nearly 30 years before Breath of the Wild perfected open world, there was Midwinter. Mike Singleton's 1989 landmark, faithfully remastered — 160,000 square miles of frozen island, 32 survivors with 32 personalities, and an invading army to resist and destroy.
The developer filed this on the Steam store page. It is not a guess by active.games.
Midwinter's optional modern art mode uses character portraits, for both the playable characters and the enemy officers, that were produced with generative AI image tools during development. These are fixed image files included in the build; nothing is generated while you play.

Version 29 - the commander, crashes and the Downhill lesson (opens in new tab)

Midwinter v28.6 - buggy rollovers, finite fuel, hidden enemy HQ, Co Player (opens in new tab)
New Intro film on the title screen. Skip with Enter, Space or Escape. The enemy headquarters is hidden at the start. Recruit enough of your team to reveal it; the Frostopedia explains how. Snow buggies can roll over. Crossing a steep side slope too fast rolls the buggy; a windscreen outline and a low tone warn you first. Better drivers can go faster. Fuel b…

FIXED 🐄 Team management: hand the driving to a companion, the buggy stays with the group, a prisoner never rides. The enemy hunts each character as in 1989. Stark gets shot at from minute one. Captured mean…

Update v27.4 - crashes, rescues, ruins, and the win (opens in new tab)
Midwinter v27.4 - everything since v26, tested through the day. Crashes and rescues After any crash - skis, snowbuggy or hang glider - you get up facing away from whatever you hit. A rescue now shows the crash and your injuries before anything else; the village screen comes after. Crash pictures match what you were riding: glider crash frames for a glider.…
