Early Access survival games still being updated in 2026
Short answer
Project Zomboid, VEIN, The Last Caretaker, Stonewards and Pax Autocratica are among the Early Access survival games that shipped updates in the last few weeks. Here is when each one last updated and how steady its patch schedule has been.
If you want to buy into an Early Access survival game in 2026, the first thing to check is whether anyone is still working on it. Early Access games can go quiet without any announcement, and the store page rarely tells you. The games below are a safer bet: every one of them shipped a build or a patch note in the last 90 days, and most did it in the last two weeks.
All numbers come from our own daily checks of Steam, as of October 21, 2026. Player counts are a snapshot of how many people were in the game at that moment, so they move around a lot.
What counts as still being updated
A game is still being updated if it shipped a public build, a beta build, or a patch note in the last 90 days. We read all three from Steam every day. Beta branches matter here, because some studios push fixes to a test branch for weeks before they touch the main one.
Recency only tells you half the story, so each game also gets a consistency score from 0 to 100. It looks at how many of the last 12 months had an update, or the months since launch for newer games, and how evenly those updates are spaced.
Why the update date matters more than the review score
- Reviews build up over years. A game can keep a Very Positive score long after the team has moved on.
- Survival games lean on updates more than most. Balance passes, save fixes and new biomes are what keep a long run playable.
- Steam's Early Access notice only reads the public branch, so it can miss a studio that is busy on a beta.

| Windrose | Aug 25 | 50, Irregular |

| Pax Autocratica | Oct 16 | 100, Very consistent |

The big names
Project Zomboid is still the giant of the genre, with more than 43,000 people playing when we checked and over 490,000 reviews. Its last patch note landed on September 28, and it had updates in 10 of the last 12 months. That earns a 60, which is consistent rather than clockwork.
VEIN has the best schedule of the larger games. It entered Early Access on October 24, 2025, had updates in 10 of the last 12 months, and pushed a beta build on October 20. Its score is 88. The Last Caretaker also posted a patch note on October 20 and has about 3,500 players, though its updates come in bursts, which is why it sits at 58.
Windrose has the second largest review count on this list, at 53,508. Its last public build was August 25, 57 days before our check. That still counts as active, but it is the one to watch.
Newer games with steady patches
Stonewards and Pax Autocratica both launched in August 2026 and have had an update in every month since, so both score 100. Mirklurk: Every Step Matters has done the same since June, with a beta build on October 20. The catch with all three is a short track record. A perfect score over three months says less than a good one over twelve.
Older games that are still going
Soulash 2 has been in Early Access since December 2023 and had updates in 11 of the last 12 months, for a score of 94. SurrounDead goes back to June 2022. It is still shipping beta builds, most recently on October 16, but only 5 of the last 12 months had an update. Sandustry has the best reviews on the list at 97% positive, and its last patch note was September 14.
How to check a survival game before you buy
- Open its page here or on Steam and find the date of the newest build or patch note.
- Check beta branches too. A quiet public branch can hide an active test branch.
- Look at how many months in the last year had any update. Ten or more is a good sign.
- Read the most recent patch note itself. A one-line hotfix is not the same as a content update.
- Treat a high review score as history, not as a promise about the next six months.
Mistakes people make
- Trusting the roadmap image on the store page. Some are years old.
- Reading a big player count as proof of active development. Popular games can stall too.
- Ignoring games that only update on a beta branch.
- Writing off a game after one quiet month. Survival games often go quiet before a large update.
The short version
Project Zomboid, VEIN and The Last Caretaker are the biggest Early Access survival games with recent updates, and VEIN has the most even schedule of the three. If you are fine with something smaller and newer, Stonewards, Pax Autocratica and Mirklurk have not missed a month yet. You can browse every survival crafting game and filter for the ones still being updated.
Frequently asked questions
Which Early Access survival game updates most regularly right now?
Of the bigger names, VEIN has the steadiest record, with a consistency score of 88 and updates in 10 of the last 12 months. Smaller, newer games such as Stonewards, Pax Autocratica and Mirklurk score 100, but they have only been in Early Access since mid-2026.
Is Project Zomboid still being updated?
Yes. Its last patch note went out on September 28, 2026, and it had updates in 10 of the last 12 months. It is still in Early Access on Steam.
How do you tell if an Early Access game has been abandoned?
Look at the date of the newest build or patch note, including beta branches. On active.games, a game with nothing in 180 days counts as having no recent updates, and anything older than a year gets a flat No.
Do beta branch updates count?
Yes. VEIN, SurrounDead and Mirklurk all had their most recent update on a beta branch. Steam's own notice only looks at the public branch, so it can make a game look quieter than it is.
Is a high review score a sign a game is still supported?
Not on its own. Reviews pile up over years, so an old score can outlive the updates. Check the last update date next to it.
